Berwick is an historic border town of great distinction, important for its medieval and Elizabethan ramparts, such buildings as its Commonwealth-era Church and early 18th-century Barracks, and a streetscape composed largely of 18th and early-19th-century houses. Two satellite settlements, Tweedmouth and Spittal, have distinctive though less well-known histories in which fishing and other industries bulk large. All three settlements have Conservation Areas.
